"Western Michigan University's Campus Development Plan, as shown in this color drawing, includes the pedestrian campus concept as an integral ingredient. The letter keys to [some of] the various usage designations as contained on this drawing are as follows:

a - athletic uses including recreation
e - main campus entries

b - buffer strips

f - focal points and gathering areas
d - dormitory areas
m - married student housing units

"As can be seen, Michigan Avenue will cease to penetrate the entire campus. From the west it will extend only to near the Student Services Building and from the east to the Administration Building. Vande Giessen Road will be closed as will part of Gilkison Avenue. This drawing was prepared by the WMU Campus Planning Department."

The Campus Development Plan and drawing are also found in the
1970 Campus Development Plan report.
